RFID
Radio Frequency Identification: Think of RFID as an 'enhanced' bar code. The basic premise is that by attaching a radio frequency tag to an object, a computer can track that object without human intervention. RFID is intended to be the serial number that contains product information to track a DOD order and shipment. The label is NOT intended to be permanent. It is a chip-based 'smart' label and is used primarily for shipping and warehousing to track product through the supply chain.

UID
Unique Item Identification: Required by the DOD, UID is used for item/product-level marking. It can be used as a top-level item or an embedded item within a top-level item. The label or marking is INTENDED to be permanent and is designed to last the service life of the item.

DPM
Direct Part Marking: This is one method of creating a UID number for the DOD.

MIL-STD-129P
This is the new standard for Military Shipping Label Requirements, and it requires DOD contractors' ship packaged materials to the Government with both linear and 2D bar codes on Military Shipping Labels.
